Based on a visual survey we have done in the Benelux, Germany, Greece, Romania, Russia and Ukraine, we have asked our non-mobile retail specialists to look at the mobile retail situation. We did the trend analysis. Compared best practices. We talked to consumers. We organized an internal think tank. And rather than just say what is wrong, we formulated 7 pragmatic steps that anyone in mobile retailing can take to start improving the customer experience and profitability of their stores.

Fifteen years ago when Ziba Design managers interviewed trends experts for a new research department, we were always struck by a commonality among the many candidates: siloed thinking. A trends specialist, for example, knew that wood was “in” that year in the auto industry and faithfully showed wood detail on all the products in her portfolio. Like her, most of the trends experts we met with had knowledge of what was trendy in a given industry, but didn’t connect the dots across industries and cultures.
”

- Design Based on Trends, Not What’s Trendy - Advertising Age - CMO Strategy

FedEx unveils Senseaware, a drop-in sensor for packages that...

FedEx unveils Senseaware, a drop-in sensor for packages that monitors everything from nasty falls to boxes being opened.

Partly, that’s just the nature of invention. Partly, it has to do with the fact that it takes a long time to develop this stuff and we’re still kind of at the beginning of the alternative generation industry. But sometimes, the crazy ideas do work, at least well enough to move out of the lab and into beta-testing. For instance, today, Norway’s state-owned utility opened a prototype generator that produces electricity via osmosis.

REBLOGGIN” REVOLUTION

How taking others” online content for your own use is no longer considered stealing

Way back when GeoCities and 56k were respected terms and not the punch lines of tech geek jokes, plenty of website coders got rich by stealing content and throwing it online with a few advertisements. But then Web surfers and search engines revolted against them, making recycled content a taboo practice (and the bottom of search queries). Times have changed though, as recently we’ve been seeing a huge boom in reblogging, with online aggregators and digests that resemble glorified bookmark pages having become accepted - and in the case of Tumblr’s “reblog” button, welcomed - forms of blogging.

Our report suggests that retailers must turn their attention to driving repeat business – shifting marketing spend away from attracting new customers and instead focussing it on adding value for their existing customer base. Those retailers that try to win on price alone will be left behind but those that clearly offer extra value, and communicate it upfront to the customer will be ahead of the game.”

frog Senior Interaction Designer Kevin Hutchinson confesses that our social power is evolving due to our presence on online social networks because we are able to find, reach, and communicate with people at a greater speed. But with this new amplified social connectivity comes a new set of expectations for increased engagement. Social networking etiquette is still evolving and it can be difficult to decipher what is appropriate in this hyper-social online space.

Hutchinson believes that, we as social creatures, should take some cues from other forms of communication. You wouldn’t text, call, or knock on someone’s door several times a day to tell them how much you enjoyed what they were reading, doing, or saying, so why comment or “like”, everything they post on their Facebook wall. Right? How does one create social boundaries on their networks and how do we not take it so, er, personally when someone does not befriend us?

In an interesting departure from traditional anti-establishment associations, Ctrl.Alt.Shift locates its arena of action as much within prevailing systems as outside them. This approach has come to define millennial movements, in fact; these days the phrase “by any means necessary” could refer equally to change initiated within the boardroom or protests led by bullhorn from the street below.
