This heat map from Bluemoon Interactive, a small code shop in Estonia, analyzes photo distribution on Panoramio to show where tourism is heaviest in the world. On the map, available on Google Maps, yellow indicates the highest concentration of tourists; red means medium, and blue indicates few tourists. In the U.S., spots along the West and East Coasts are the most “touristy.” Tourism is rampant everywhere in Europe, with yellow dominating the region. In Africa, the most yellow pops along the continent’s northern edges. And in South America (above), along with the usual suspects (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, etc.), there’s a heavy concentration around Bógota, Colombia, as well. As we noted in our 100 Things to Watch in 2010, Bógota has been on the rise, with new hotels and restaurants and a nightlife supported by its gay-friendly atmosphere. Which of the blue or red areas will be the next to turn yellow?

Even though La Candelaria is in Bogotá’s city centre parts of it feel like a remote Andean village. With its colonial mansions, bohemian atmosphere and plans for regeneration afoot, foreign property buyers are investing in the area and snapping up bargains.
